The Crunchy Snow Bull

Our good friend Dave was able to make a terrific off hand shot at 300 yards. About 12 inches of snow on the ground with a ton of rain the day before created a very hard crust on the snow which was very difficult to trek in plus be quiet. We rode the horses for about 2 hours in the dark and tied them up just before daybreak. With the crunchy conditions it was miserable and exhausting to walk in but we pushed through anyways. As we climbed a ridge we took a break on a vantage point. This spot normally would take 20 minutes to get to from where the horses were but we took 45 minutes because of the tough snow. While we sat there to glass for elk the guide decide to take a short hike to scout for a better spot to glass. The two hunter left behind to keep watching spotted a cow elk behind them crunching through the snow. When the guide came back they motioned to him to hurry over to assess the situation. The more they looked a few more glimpses of elk came into view across the canyon. Finally, a bull was spotted and with a off hand standing shot Dave nailed the bull at 300 yards. That was the only shot presented because of thick underbrush.

3 Bulls In Two Minutes 2017

This was opening week of rifle season 2017. Jim, Andrew and Tony all had a pretty exciting day on the third day of the hunt. The first two days were cold and windy – the elk were not moving much so they were itching for some action.  They were sitting on a hillside glassing for any hint of elk and deer with no luck that morning. As they sat there (some of them napping from the strenuous up-mountain morning hike) Tony spotted a cow bedded down. All you could see was barely her head. In a few minutes, Tony spotted two more.  Now it was getting interesting!  As they watched for the next hour they started to pick out more and more elk.  Eventually it went from one elk at 800 yards to over 30 elk and 5 legal bulls. Over time the elk began to get up and feed for the afternoon, and the guide made a plan and began the stalk to close the 800-yard distance. The plan was to drop into a draw and get out of sight, so no one would get caught by the wary eyes of so many elk. They had over 400 yards to close the distance to be able to make accurate shots. Once they were all in the planned for position, they noticed the herd was nowhere to be found where they had last been seen.  Came to find out as the hunt party had moved towards the elk while the elk grazed downhill that the elk ended up downhill of the hunters instead of being directly across from them. Once they figured that out the elk were now under 250 yards away they all got set up for shots. Andrew was designated to be the first shooter because it was his first elk hunt. As we waited for a bull to stop broadside, Andrew was patient and picked out a bull to his liking.  Once Andrew shot, the other two, Jim and Tony, found a bull each and made their shots respectively. It all lasted about two minutes once the shooting started. When the dust settled, and after they took pictures is when the hard and long work really started. It took over 3 hours to quarter all three elk and get them ready for horses to pack out the next day, now that the sun had set. They had to start hiking back late in the night and didn’t get back to camp until after 10:00 pm. The next day was a lot of work to pack put all the quarters and heads. The problem we had was we only had 4 horses to pack out the elk which is not enough pack stock for the enormity of this job! The ride to where the elk heads and quarters were was very difficult due to lots of downfall. So, we packed 8 elk quarters and one head on the horses. The hunters and guide carried the rest of the quarters and two remaining heads on their pack frames. A long hard day of work, but makes for a great story and tons of memories.

The 85 yard shot 2017

Big day of climbing on this day as we saw elk and some bulls high up on the mountain the day before. As we hike and climb about 1,500 feet with any luck then all of a sudden we spotted two cows bedded in the open on top of this mountain. They were about 150 away from us and we knew there had to be more there. We tried hard to keep looking for more elk without being spotted but we couldn’t find any more. So we back off and took a break to think about our strategy and then a bugle came from where the cows were bedded. Casey the guide went to check where the bull was and noticed him bedded under a tree about 500 yards away. Now we knew he was but had no way to get to him with bad terrain or the other cows spotting us. So we stayed where we were and ate some lunch and enjoyed a awesome vista. We finally just thought we would wait for the bull to get up in the evening but we had to wait 4 hours for that to happen. About 45 minutes into our wait the wind started to really pick up and we heard the bull start to bugle again. So Casey went to check on the bull and noticed he had moved closer to us. He finally moved into a little draw that was out of the wind. We all tried to get in position to get a shot while the bull was just over a 100 yards away. The bull was eating and chasing some cows and worked his way as close as 85 yards and Brian saw his opportunity. Brian made a fantastic shot at a bull. He didn’t run 20 yards before collapsing.
